Referential vagueness, plurality, and discourse dependence

چکیده

Abstract Referentially vague (or ‘ignorance’) indefinites are known to exhibit apparently conflicting behavior: in the singular, they referentially (Giannakidou and Quer 2013, Alonso-Ovalle Menéndez-Benito 2010, 2011, 2013), but plural appear depend on a discourse given set. The phenomenon is typically discussed context of Spanish algún/algunos (Gutiérrez-Rexach 2001, Martí 2008, 2009); this paper we offer extensive novel data from Greek kapjos/kapjoi exhibiting same asymmetry between singular plural. apparent conflict two variants, propose, just that—apparent: remain both uses. Referential vagueness not at odds with familiarity, differences follow NP -ellipsis, potential topicality indefinite, way interacts plurality.

Vagueness in Political Discourse

The paper presents two studies on vagueness in political discourse. The first is a qualitative analysis of the commonsense definition of vagueness and related notions in political discourse. Participants were submitted two fragments of real political argumentations and a questionnaire asking to rate them as to vagueness, sincerity, persuasiveness and other criteria. They showed that two aspects...

Vagueness and Context Dependence

Commentators on vagueness have identified a series of phenomena correlated to an expression ε’s being vague. Prominent among these are: ε must present possible borderline cases of its application (borderlineness); it must seem that, if ε is true of a case, it is also true of every qualitatively very similar case (sorites susceptibility); the sharp cutoff for ε’s application, if it exists at all...

Semantic Vagueness and Context-dependence

A new solution is offered for the ancient ’sorites’ paradox of vagueness. The sorites paradox arises if it is assumed that if two objects are indistinguishable, then a vague predicate (e.g., large, or small) can never distinguish between them. The proposed solution to the paradox depends on a systematic ambiguity that is displayed by vague predicates as well as vague relations (e.g., the relati...

Vagueness and Referential Ambiguity in a Large-scale Annotated Corpus∗

In this paper, we argue that difficulties in the definition of coreference itself contribute to lower inter-annotator agreement in certain cases. Data from a large referentially annotated corpus serves to corroborate this point, using a quantitative investigation to assess which effects or problems are likely to be the most prominent. Several examples where such problems occur are discussed in ...

Referential density in discourse and syntactic typology

Narrative production experiments reveal systematic crosslinguistic differences in the preferred ratio of overt to possible argumental NPs (called here the REFERENTIAL DENSITY value) between three pro-drop languages of the Himalayas (Belhare, Maithili, Nepali). These differences can be accounted for by the degree to which morphosyntactic features of NPs, especially case features, are relevant fo...
